Remote Handling

The Aquila team has many years of experience in the nuclear industry which includes the specialist areas of containment, shielded systems, remote handling and nuclear packaging.

Our engineers have been involved in projects from the design concept stage right through to manufacturing, testing at our factory and installation/commissioning on the clients’ sites.

Clients engage with Aquila at different stages in the delivery process, but we like to get involved as early as possible so that we can share best industry practice from the start, saving time and money and delivering to our clients’ exact requirements.

Delivery Stages

  • Feasibility studies and cost options
  • Engineering substantiation and validation
  • Concept design and detail schemes
  • Full size mock up for handling and functionality trials
  • Budget pricing from concept designs and
    detail schemes
  • Detail design and manufacturing drawings for complete system
  • Full manufacturing specification including NDT
  • Manufacture and procurement
  • Full assembly and factory acceptance tests (FATS)
  • Installation and site acceptance tests (SATS)
  • Life Time Quality Records
  • Annual maintenance

Remote handling applications cover

  • Sourcing commercially off the shelf (COTS) systems where suitable. Master Slave Manipulators, Power Manipulators, Hybrid Systems.
  • Remote grabs, manual and powered with intelligent feedback for drums, containers and kegs
  • Special remote tooling for material samples and placement of instrumentation
  • Special remote tooling for inspection, repair or recovery situations
  • Remote handling for decommissioning, waste handling, size reduction and fuel handling

Case Study: Remote Handling

The Challenge

Aquila was asked to team with a leading radiometrics business on an exclusive basis during the bid stage for drum assaying. In a short bid period we needed to produce a scheme design in enough detail to ensure we met the functional specification and also were able to provide a firm price.

What We Did

We designed, in 3D, the complete drum assay system which incorporated drum lift and rotate remotely, all housed with composite plastic and lead shielding, during the bid stage and ultimately, won the contract. The complete system including the EC&I, was designed and built within our own facility prior to despatch to our client’s site for integration of radiometrics.

The Result

Working as an integrated team during the bid stage, our client trusted us to provide a robust remote handling solution together with the EC&I. The end user gained the benefit of decades of nuclear engineering expertise during the bid stage to gain confidence in our proposed joint solution.
