The Aquila team has many years of experience in the nuclear industry which includes the specialist areas of containment, shielded systems, remote handling and nuclear packaging.

Our engineers have been involved in projects from the design concept stage right through to manufacturing, testing at our factory and installation/commissioning on the clients’ sites.

Case Study: Shielded Facilities


The Challenge

Aquila was asked to design and manufacture 2 shielded containment facilities to be used for safely re-packaging and removing legacy, radioactive material from two existing facilities, on a licenced nuclear site. The challenge was to try and standardise both shielded systems as far as practicable but maintain flexibility in operation.

What We Did

Following 3D scheme design, the Aquila team built a full size mock up which simulated the unique features on each of the existing waste stores on site. This allowed us to replicate the site conditions in our workshop and undertake trials to demonstrate fit for purpose design solutions. This included remote handling trails with tongs and lead glass windows.

The Result

Following mock up trials, design modifications were fed back into the 3D models from which the full manufacturing details drawings were produced together with the full Bill of Materials for procurement. Both systems were fully assembled and tested (including scintillation) in the Aquila workshop prior to installation and commissioning on the client’s site.
